Participating Artists

Bushra Gill is interested in finding order within the chaos of everyday life through art. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and emigrated to Houston, Texas, with her family as a small child. Drawn to art from a young age, she graduated from Pratt Institute in 1994, with a BFA in sculpture. She spent many years of working as a museum educator at various galleries and museums including The Museum of Modern Art, The Drawing Center and The Rotunda Gallery, while also working as a studio assistant to various artists including Maya Lin, Ursula von Rydingsvard and Maria Elena Gonzalez, as well as a career as a clothing designer and boutique owner in New York. In 2009, she moved to northern California with her family and returned to making art. In recent years, Gill has participated in many exhibitions in galleries on the west coast. Learn more here.

Kacy Jung is a Taiwanese visual artist based in San Francisco. Before she began her journey in art, she had been working in the biomedical science field for many years when she decided to walk out of the lab to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an artist. Since then, through photography, photo sculpture, and performance,  she continuously investigates the ways in which culture is shaped by capitalism and explores the idea of existentialism within the late capitalism era. The subject often intertwines with the manipulative nature of the capitalist system, the anxiety of being part of the disappearing middle class, and her immigrant experience in the USA. Kacy’s works have been shown/awarded internationally. Learn more here.

Sunroop Kaur holds a BFA in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Kaur is an interdisciplinary artist currently working in between Vancouver and Central Vally California. Her practice employs Eastern and Western iconography to decontextualize cultural materials, and create spaces that reclaim South Asian narratives. Using cultural hybridity as a lens, Kaur is able to translate the struggles of a lived expereience while allowing for the syntehsis of critical spaces and generative dialogue within the Punjabi Sikh Diaspora. Her practice is a distillation of familial  and community history– through which she counteracts the legacies of colonial violence and theft. She hopes her work is a restorative force that can facilitate reconciliation and healing for her community. Learn more here.

Patricia Rojas-Zambrano is an artist, activist, psychotherapist, and educator with over 25 years of clinical experience in community mental health and adult education.”Informed and inspired by my work as a therapist and educator with immigrant and refugee communities where I experience firsthand the struggles and triumphs of people of color, my art conveys a variety of affective states that are commonly considered difficult, negative or problematic, such as rage, pain or sadness. I am particularly drawn to portraying women and girls, aware of the immense injustices they face within this patriarchal system, yet amazed by the resiliency and power they possess. In my paintings, my characters claim justice and are desperate to be heard and seen in their authentic feelings, while creating space to dream and hope beyond the physical world.” Learn more here.
