Paper collage with Kate Goka
Merging different types of paper and other mixed media to create a collage. As an artist whose practice includes making paper, Kate Goka invites you to begin by holding and touching various papers both to observe the paper and think about what you associate with the textures. From there, use your experience of texture as a guide for creating a collage of personal meaning.
Shadow Puppet Portraits with Jess Nguyen
Jessica Nguyen is an artist and educator specializing in movement and visual arts disciplines ranging from dance, puppetry, and circus to illustration and sculpture. She has collaborated and performed as a shadow puppeteer all around the Bay Area, and is a core member of Shadowlight Productions. If you know her, you know Jess has a lifelong love and involvement in the natural world and is deeply invested in the entomological world. You can often catch her sipping tea and, unsurprisingly, mulling over fun facts to share with you. Find more of her work at https://www.ghosthearted.com/
Today, Jess will facilitate an exploration of a self-portraiture in shadow and collage, and she will share some fundamental shadow puppet animation techniques. Come and assemble a shadowscape of creative self-discovery from found objects, light, and wire contours.
